Before Seeking a Phoenix Preceptor in Connecticut

Connecticut's Full Practice classification describes the authority of qualified NPs under state law. In AANP's framework, NPs can evaluate, diagnose, order and interpret tests, and initiate and manage treatments under the state nursing board's licensure authority. It does not mean every out-of-state online NP program is available to Connecticut residents.

University of Phoenix currently omits Connecticut from both published NP availability lists. Ask for a written answer that names the student's MSN/FNP or MSN/PMH pathway, enrolled catalog, residence, intended licensure state, and proposed clinical state. Without authorization, do not begin a preceptor search in Hartford, New Haven, Stamford, or elsewhere.

The Connecticut Board of Examiners for Nursing is the official source for Connecticut nursing regulation. If the University provides written direction for a proposed experience, verify the preceptor's legal identity, license status, advanced practice credential, certification, and public discipline through official records.

Board verification does not approve the academic rotation. Phoenix must separately approve the site, preceptor, patient population, agreement, and compliance file. A clinician can be fully licensed and still be a poor course match because the practice lacks the required age group, encounter type, schedule, or organizational permission.

Phoenix requires at least 600 supervised hours in the FNP pathway. Four courses contribute 45 hours each, covering adult and geriatric care, women's health, and pediatrics, followed by a 420-hour final preceptorship. At least 500 hours must be primary care, with the rest controlled by the handbook's permitted categories.

The PMH pathway also totals at least 600 hours: three 60-hour courses and a 420-hour course across the life span. The aggregate must include psychotherapy and pediatric or adolescent, adult, and geriatric minimums. Both programs also require a separate five-day in-person residency in Phoenix, Arizona. These requirements do not override Connecticut availability.

RN-to-BSN students complete 90 direct-care hours in two 45-hour community and public-health courses. The work must be on-site, community based, and separate from acute-care or ordinary paid duties. DNP students complete an Applied Project tied to a minimum of 1,000 total practice hours, with qualifying prior hours subject to University review and approval.

DNP learners choose a practice site and a site-based External Consultant, while the assigned Project Chair guides the academic work. Non-NP MSN practicum requirements differ by concentration and version. Confirm that the student's program is available in Connecticut and read the current academic plan before sourcing any site.

Phoenix describes clinical placement as an ongoing partnership. Students are encouraged to bring professional contacts and workplace ideas to the program or clinical coordinator. The coordinator assists with securing placements, handles approval and agreement tasks, and follows up when no approved arrangement is recorded. Students must remain responsive and complete every required clearance item.

If current written direction supports a Connecticut clinical plan, submit the proposed site and preceptor before discussing a start date. In the current handbook, FNP and PMH each allow no more than 100 telehealth hours under their specific course rules. The student must be physically in the same location as the approved preceptor. RN-to-BSN allows no more than four direct clinical telehealth hours. None of those provisions creates a fully remote practicum.

They also do not turn Connecticut into an eligible NP state. If the University authorizes a different Connecticut field experience, physical and telehealth-capable site options can be assessed within the written limits. State, course, site, and University requirements determine whether any virtual patient contact counts.

Hartford and surrounding central Connecticut can support one radius, while New Haven, Bridgeport, Stamford, and lower Fairfield County have different travel patterns. New London and Norwich cover the southeast, and Waterbury or Danbury may fit western students. A workable placement must survive weekly traffic, shift timing, and the full course schedule.

Location comes after population fit. Community health, a DNP project environment, primary care, and psychiatric population work each require different site evidence. Document the service line, preceptor availability, patient group, proposed dates, and signing authority before asking Phoenix to evaluate the lead.
