MSN Practicum and Preceptor Placement for University of Phoenix Students

Phoenix's MSN is not one program with one clinical rule. The concentration you choose determines whether you owe a modest practicum, a full nurse-practitioner clinical load, or an in-person residency in Arizona. It is worth being precise about which track you are in before you plan a placement.

These figures reflect the current University of Phoenix Nursing Program Handbook. Requirements can change, and your graduation is governed by the handbook you enrolled under, so confirm the exact hours and structure for your concentration against your University of Phoenix Nursing Student Handbook before you commit to a plan. Note that Phoenix does not offer AGNP, pediatric NP, neonatal NP, or women's-health NP tracks; its only NP options are FNP and PMHNP.

The Nurse Education, Nurse Administration, and Informatics concentrations are not nurse-practitioner programs and carry no residency in Arizona. They do, however, include a practicum: a minimum of 60 clinical hours each. For Nurse Administration and Informatics those hours split into roughly 15 direct-care and 45 indirect-care hours; for Nurse Education the 60 hours are direct-care. Confirm the current split against the handbook.

Because these are applied, project-oriented practica, the right placement is a setting and a preceptor whose work matches your concentration: a nurse educator or academic setting for NED, a nurse leader or administrator for ADM, a nursing informatics or clinical-systems role for INF. The hours are fewer than an NP track, but the site and preceptor still have to be approved, and finding a qualified preceptor in leadership, education, or informatics can be its own small search. The two direct-care NP concentrations are a different order of commitment. Each requires a minimum of 600 supervised clinical hours, and each also requires an in-person, 5-day residency in Phoenix, Arizona, completed toward the end of the Advanced Health Assessment course (NRP/571). The residency is embedded in the course and cannot be skipped; students arrange their own travel and it commonly runs across a Thursday to Monday window.

The clinical hours differ by track. For FNP, a minimum of 500 of the 600 hours must be in primary care, with the remaining 100 in primary or specialty areas. For PMHNP, the 600 hours are distributed across psychiatric populations: roughly 100 psychotherapy, 100 pediatric or adolescent, 100 adult, 100 geriatric, and 200 flexible across any age. Those distributions come from the current handbook and can change, so confirm them for your enrollment.

The residency is the university's to run; you attend it in Phoenix. What is on you is the 600 supervised clinical hours, and that is a substantial preceptor search: an FNP needs a primary-care preceptor across the lifespan, and a PMHNP needs a board-certified psychiatric preceptor able to cover the population breadth. Across every MSN concentration, Phoenix's model is the same: coursework is online, and the in-person experience takes place in an approved healthcare or practice setting that you arrange, which may include your workplace or local community. The university sets the requirements and approves the site; it does not go find the preceptor for you. For a 60-hour informatics practicum that is manageable; for a 600-hour FNP or PMHNP clinical load, it is a real project.
