Planning Phoenix NP Hours Across Michigan

Michigan is a Restricted Practice state, and University of Phoenix currently lists Michigan for both its online MSN/FNP and MSN/PMH programs. Eligible students may complete approved clinical experiences there when the site, preceptor, patient mix, agreement, and University requirements align.

Phoenix NP practice in Michigan: Restricted practice authority (AANP), with the University of Phoenix 600-hour supervised NP sequence and the 5-day Phoenix residency
Michigan: Restricted practice authority (AANP). University of Phoenix NP tracks require 600 supervised hours plus a 5-day Phoenix residency; confirm state availability.

Begin with Michigan's practice environment

Michigan falls in AANP's Restricted Practice category. State law restricts at least one element of NP practice and requires career-long supervision, delegation, or team management by another provider. That legal structure affects how a clinic organizes provider responsibilities, but the student remains supervised under the approved course and preceptor plan.

Check the proposed clinician through the Michigan Board of Nursing. Match the legal name, active credential, advanced practice standing, national certification, population focus, and public record. Phoenix separately reviews whether the professional and organization meet educational needs, so an active license is necessary but is not the entire approval.

Turn the FNP total into course-level needs

Phoenix FNP students complete at least 600 supervised hours. Four courses require 45 hours each: adult and geriatric management I, adult and geriatric management II, women's health, and pediatric management. The final preceptorship requires 420 hours. At least 500 hours across the sequence must be primary care.

A suitable Michigan lead must support the assigned course, not merely employ an experienced NP. Ask about preventive and acute visits, chronic disease management, age range, women's health access, pediatric volume, and the preceptor's weekly presence. Specialty exposure in the final course must stay inside handbook boundaries and cannot replace the required primary-care foundation.

Build PMH coverage before the final course

The PMH track also contains at least 600 supervised hours. PMH/503, PMH/504, and PMH/505 each require 60 hours, followed by 420 hours in PMH/506. Students need 100 psychotherapy hours, 100 pediatric or adolescent hours, 100 adult hours, 100 geriatric hours, and 200 hours in any age group or combination.

A behavioral health site may serve only one age band or offer medication management without sufficient psychotherapy. Ask for the actual patient census, encounter types, and preceptor schedule. Mapping each requirement early can reveal whether one Michigan site is enough or whether an additional approved setting is needed.

Search Michigan as a set of local markets

Detroit, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Flint, and Kalamazoo offer different mixes of health systems, independent practices, community clinics, and behavioral health organizations. Select a radius based on repeated travel, not a single favorable drive. Weather, traffic, start time, shift duration, and the number of course weeks all affect attendance.

Use patient fit to rank leads. A convenient location without the correct population or encounter type creates an hour deficit. Confirm the physical address, clinical service line, expected days, start window, preceptor presence, and authorized agreement contact before submitting a candidate.

Phoenix and the student share placement work

The handbook describes coordinator-assisted placement rather than a student-only search. Students can bring workplace contacts and professional leads. The clinical coordinator assists with locating and securing sites and preceptors, evaluates referrals, handles agreements, and communicates as clinical courses approach.

If a placement is still unresolved, the coordinator, Program Chair, and student continue the process, with possible assignment within 100 miles of the student's residence. The handbook does not promise a particular date. Students should reply promptly, complete compliance tasks, and disclose schedule or address changes before they disrupt an approval.

Approval and residency come before hours

Typhon is the official system for site and preceptor approval, scheduling, time entries, patient case logs, and evaluations. The required affiliation agreement and clearance items must be complete before clinical activity. The preceptor verifies time, while faculty reviews and approves the academic record.

Both NP tracks also require a five-day in-person residency in Phoenix, Arizona, near the end of NRP/571 and before the precepted sequence. Faculty-supervised competency assessments occur there. Michigan placement hours, online instruction, and simulation do not replace this campus requirement.

Use telehealth only within the stated limits

FNP students may apply up to 100 telehealth hours only in the final 420-hour preceptorship. PMH students may apply up to 100 telehealth hours, with experience distributed across focus areas rather than placed entirely in one. In either pathway, the student must be physically co-located with the approved preceptor.

A patient can be remote while the student and preceptor work together at the approved Michigan site. That is different from a fully remote or from-home clinical. The state, course, organization, and Phoenix must all permit the workflow, and the rest of the required experience remains physical.

Keep RN-to-BSN and DNP requirements distinct

Phoenix RN-to-BSN students complete 90 direct-care clinical hours in community and public-health settings, divided into two 45-hour courses. The work is on-site and cannot simply duplicate acute-care employment. No more than four direct hours may use telehealth.

DNP students complete an Applied Project and at least 1,000 total practice hours. Approved prior graduate practice hours may count, up to 500, so remaining requirements vary. The learner selects a practice site and External Consultant and works with a Project Chair. Non-NP MSN requirements depend on the enrolled concentration and catalog version.

Questions

Good to know

Does Phoenix currently list Michigan for both NP programs?

Yes. Michigan appears on the current MSN/FNP and MSN/PMH availability lists. Every site and preceptor still requires formal University approval.

How many supervised hours does each Phoenix NP track require?

FNP and PMH each require at least 600 supervised clinical hours, distributed across course and population requirements.

Can a student complete Michigan hours fully online?

No. Limited telehealth can count under specific rules, but the student must be physically with the approved preceptor and both tracks also require a five-day Phoenix residency.

Who approves the clinical records?

The preceptor verifies time and evaluations through Typhon, and University faculty approves the academic documentation.
