Check Insurance Before Your Phoenix Clinical Starts

Do not assume that an employer's coverage, a personal policy, or another student's checklist applies to your course. Ask the clinical coordinator whether individual professional liability insurance is required by the University, the program, the proposed organization, or more than one of them. Request the current document name, effective dates, coverage terms, and upload location in writing.

Requirements can differ by pathway and organization. A hospital system, community site, primary-care clinic, and behavioral-health practice may use different onboarding checklists. The enrolled handbook and the site's agreement control. This page does not recommend an insurer or invent a coverage amount. It gives you the questions that keep an insurance item from holding up an otherwise usable match.

• Name that must appear on the certificate

Employer insurance usually protects the organization and its workforce within defined job duties. A student experience may be outside those paid duties, even when it occurs at the same workplace. Ask the employer's risk or education contact whether its policy covers the student role and whether the organization still requires an individual certificate. Do not rely on a supervisor's informal assurance when the site compliance team controls onboarding.

RN-to-BSN hours cannot be completed during regular paid work under the current handbook, and the community or public-health activity must be distinct from ordinary acute-care duties. For NP and non-NP MSN experiences, a workplace may be considered only when the course, supervision, agreements, and role separation fit. The workplace practicum guide helps frame that conversation.

Insurance proof is one item, not the approval itself. NP students complete the applicable compliance work in Complio before NRP/571, and the site and preceptor approval workflow continues through Typhon. The organization may also require immunization, background, training, confidentiality, or other current records. The clinical coordinator manages the University approval and agreement steps and can identify which items belong to the student, site, or supervisor.

A policy does not make a clinician qualified or a site appropriate. The course still needs the correct setting, scope, patient population, affiliation agreement, and College approval. Keep a dated checklist so an expiring item is renewed before the first activity, not after a schedule is offered.

Ask whether the same policy covers in-person care, telehealth encounters, and the states in which the student, preceptor, patient, and organization are located. Do not infer coverage from the word virtual. Policy territory, professional scope, site rules, and state law can matter, and only the insurer and responsible University or site contact can confirm the answer for a specific policy.

The academic format remains limited. Only NRP/590 permits FNP students to use as many as 100 telehealth hours. PMHNP permits up to 100 telehealth hours under its focus-area rules. In each NP pathway, the student and approved preceptor must remain together at the physical site during telehealth. RN-to-BSN permits no more than four direct telehealth hours. Insurance cannot convert those rules into a fully remote experience.

Compare the certificate with the current written checklist. Check the student's legal name, professional designation if requested, policy period, coverage description, limits, and any certificate-holder instructions. If the site requires a separate form or endorsement, ask before assuming the standard certificate is enough. Keep the original policy record and the version submitted.

Upload proof only through the official channel directed by the University or site. Typhon and Complio have specific roles in applicable Phoenix pathways, while a health system may use its own secure onboarding portal. Do not send identity, health, or financial documents through ordinary outreach to a prospective preceptor.
